Toshiba Qosmio X770

Although it’s easy to dismiss 3D as a gimmick that might disappear in a couple of years, there’s no denying its current popularity. As a result, we’ve seen plenty of 3D-compatible laptops in recent times, such as Sony’s ridiculously enormous VAIO F-Series and the HP Envy 17 3D.

Toshiba’s Qosmio X770-107 is clearly intended for 3D gaming, with its red-and-black rough-edge design. Thankfully it’s a lot more subtle than the likes of Alienware’s laptops, with their glowing headlights and angular spacecraft bodies, and it’s also a bit lighter than most gaming laptops.

The brain of the operation is an Intel Core i7 2630QM processor, running at 2GHz. This quad-core beauty is one of Intel’s latest Sandy Bridge efforts, and the scores we churned out of Cinebench were mightily impressive.

Toshiba’s Qosmio X770-107 is as powerful as some top-end gaming machines, including Alienware’s M14X and M18X. Backed up by a generous 8GB of memory, you’ll have no trouble running any modern game, or the very best editing software.

If you’re looking for a gaming laptop and are sold by the 3D gimmick, the Qosmio offers everything you could possibly need.

UX31E Ultrabook From Asus

Asus has had to respect the strict conditions laid down by Intel to qualify its Zenbook UX31E for the 'ultrabook' category: 2 cm thick, decent battery life and powerful processor. Sold at a little more than the Acer S3, does the UX31E also have the edge when it comes to performance?

In contrast to the S3, here the casing hasn’t been designed to create the impression of being in aluminium. Rather, it is in aluminium, from top to tail! The only bits of plastic (matte) are the frames for screen and keyboard. The UX31E therefore doesn't pick up too many marks from your fingers. There are no issues with the finish and the different parts of the chassis all fit in nicely with each other.
At first sight, the keyboard seems perfect. Once you start using it however, you find the chiclet keys are a bit shallow and if you tend to type with force when word processing, you’ll soon feel as if you’re typing on a touchscreen tablet. Nevertheless all the keys are in their usual positions, are a decent size and don't make too much keying noise.

The multitouch touchpad is much nicer to use, has plenty of surface area and the glide is fluid. We do however advise you to push the cursor speed up as far as you can (within the limitations of the Windows settings) as the default speed seems incredibly slow.

Asus Zenbook UX31E

Asus's supersleek Ultrabook, the Zenbook UX31E, is finally here--and it's gorgeous. With its brushed-aluminum design, it more closely resembles the MacBook Air than other Ultrabooks do, and it really does elicit a Zen-like feeling. Throw in an i5 processor, Bluetooth 4.0, and a USB 3.0 port, and the Zenbook UX31E is almost--but not quite--perfect.

It sports an Intel Core i5-2557M processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB solid-state drive. It also features a built-in 0.3-megapixel webcam, a microphone, and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.

Performance-wise, the Zenbook UX31E is surprisingly robust considering its sleek form. In our WorldBench 6 benchmark suite, the Zenbook earned a score of 125--better than several of our top-rated ultraportable laptops, including the Samsung Series 9 (which had a mark of 103), the Asus U36S (114), and the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 (124). This result also makes it slightly faster than the other Ultrabooks we’ve tested so far.

The Zenbook has no discrete graphics card, and therefore relies on Intel's integrated graphics (as most ultraportables do). Graphics performance is slightly below average for the category: In our Far Cry 2 graphics tests, the Zenbook managed a frame rate of 31.4 frames per second (at low quality settings and 800-by-600-pixel resolution). That frame rate is below average for the past few ultraportables we've tested, but not too far below. Still, it means that the Zenbook won't satisfy gamers.

The Zenbook UX31E is a breathtaking computer, different in appearance from Apple's MacBook Air series in a few key respects. The ultrathin chassis features a slate-gray aluminum cover with a circular brushed design and sharp corners. The size, the tapered design, and the metallic look make the Zenbook resemble the MacBook Air to such an extent that you’d be forgiven for mistaking them at a glance. The interior ditches the concentric-circles pattern in favor of bright silvery brushed aluminum on the deck, a dark matte-gray bezel around the screen, and a silver glass-coated touchpad. The UX31E sports a Chiclet-style keyboard in matte silver.

The keyboard, which is not backlit, is comfortable and easy to type on. The keys are large with sharp corners, and widely spaced. You'll find no extra buttons around the keyboard, but the Function keys can serve as extra buttons--for example, you can put the computer to sleep, turn the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth on or off, and adjust volume and screen brightness using the Fn keys. The power button looks like a regular key, and is located in the top-right corner of the keyboard.

The glass-coated touchpad looks and feels a lot like Apple's trackpads. The Zenbook's has a small black line in the middle, at the bottom, to denote the left- and right-click zones. Although the touchpad is smooth and supports multitouch gestures such as two-finger scrolling, it needs some work. When I first tested the touchpad, it had a tendency to overshoot objects on the screen, and it produced a significant delay in the tap-to-click function. A driver update to coincide with the Zenbook's launch fixes these issues...to a degree. The mouse no longer overshoots, but the cursor is slow and takes a long time to travel across the screen (even after you adjust the cursor speed in the Mouse Settings panel). Also, even though the tap-to-click delay has been shortened, the slight lag is still obvious and annoying. It doesn't crop up when you depress the designated left- or right-mouse-click areas.

The Zenbook has a nice selection of ports for an ultra-ultraportable. It offers two USB ports--one of them USB 3.0--as well as a mini-VGA port, a Micro HDMI port, and a headphone jack. You'll also find an SD Card reader, which is a big plus on such a sliver of a machine.

The UX31E is an impressively slim 0.8 inch thick at its thickest point, and merely 0.12 inch thick at the very front. That's just slightly thicker than the current 13-inch MacBook Air, which is 0.68 inch at its thickest (0.12 inch at its thinnest). The Zenbook UX31E weighs 3.1 pounds, only 0.14 pound heavier than the 13-inch MacBook Air. With the power brick, the Zenbook weighs 3.8 pounds, which is just enough to make your shoulder hurt after a while. In PCWorld's tests, however, the Zenbook managed to chug along on its battery for a good 6.5 hours, so you may not need to haul around the half-pound power brick.

The Zenbook's glossy, 13.3-inch screen has a native resolution of 1600 by 900 pixels, and is very bright and crisp. That’s a bit higher resolution than on some of the other Ultrabooks we've seen, which feature 1366-by-768-pixel displays. However, color representation isn't fantastic: The entire screen has a slightly bluish tint, especially at higher brightness levels, and skin tones look a little burnt.

Multimedia playback on the Zenbook is quite good. Streaming HD video plays without any hiccups, though at full screen it has some minor artifacting and loss of detail. Audio playback is good for an ultraportable machine: The speakers, which are located above the keyboard in the hinge of the computer, are loud and surprisingly full-sounding. A slight echo is audible at the highest volume.

The Zenbook is nicely free of bloatware, though you do get an Asus Utility suite, which includes FaceLogOn software and a 100-page electronic manual.

The Asus Zenbook UX31E is impressive: It's an excellent performer, it's attractive and light, and it plays back multimedia well. Unfortunately, its screen is off-color and its touchpad needs some more work

Samsung 900X3A 9 Series

The "900X3A" is an ultra light 13.3-inch laptop the company hopes will steer potential Apple converts away from the MacBook Air. It is part of the "9 Series", Samsung's flagship brand for its leading products and will soon be joined by an 11-inch model that threatens to be even more lust worthy.

So what does the 900X3A bring to the table? The first thing you will notice is its size, or rather the lack of it. At 16.3mm, tapering to 15.9in, the 900X3A is arguably thinner than the equivalent size Air which measures 17mm at its thickest point, though it does then taper to a cake-cuttingly sharp 3mm. Likewise the 900X3A has the slightest of advantages when it comes to weight, tipping the scales at 1.31Kg verses the Air's 1.32Kg

Apple MacBook Pro 15in (MC723B/A)

Thia MacBook Pro is a serious laptop for serious people. The combination of Apple’s superb industrial design combined with the latest and greatest components available makes the latest MacBook Pro an invitingly stylish and powerful portable workstation. So where the MacBook Air could fairly be described as an expensive indulgence, the MacBook Pro should prove merely expensive.
Anyone hoping for major changes to the construction of the MacBook Pro this generation will be disappointed. As fans of the solidly built unibody chassis, however, we’re pleased to see its persistence. The MacBook Pro feels simply sumptuous, and the metal body not only inspires confidence in the build quality, but also goes a long way to justifying the price.

We particularly like the backlit keyboard (and still lament its removal from the MacBook Air) which, as well as being easy to see, also offers a crisp response and makes typing a real pleasure. Like the keyboard, the trackpad is also exactly the same as on previous MacBook Pros, and again this is no bad thing. Other laptop manufacturers have done their best to integrate multi-touch into their products, but Apple definitely still has them all beat.
Primarily this is a result of the tight integration between the trackpad and OS X, with pinch to zoom, two finger scrolling, and a huge number of other multi-finger gestures working as well in third party programs as they do in Apple’s own applications. We’re particularly fond of the three finger ‘forward’ and ‘back’ gesture in both Finder and our choice of web browser.

At 364mm x 249mm x 24.1mm in size, and weighing 2.54kg the 15in MacBook Pro isn’t a laptop you’d want actually sitting on your lap very often, but it isn’t so heavy that you’d be unhappy taking it to and from work every day, or carrying into a meeting room occasionally. It's certainly not a frequent flyers best friend, though. The power adaptor is light enough not to cause concern, and we definitely approve of its modular design, with either a plug built into the adapter or a long cable available.
An addition we’re not particularly enthralled with, but which might be of interest to some buyers is the new FaceTime HD camera. As the name suggests, this constitutes a 720p sensor, in the same place as every previous MacBook Pro had its standard definition one. A small mercy is that new MacBook Pros come with FaceTime installed, saving you the £0.99 cost owners of older Macs are subject to. Suffice to say that this works, and looks good, but that we’re not inclined to use it.

So you can enjoy the latest mobile technology.however it does everything that I expect it do well, but would probably lack the power to play games or complete tasks that require and demand a lot from the system, I get the feeling it would start to run slowly at times. The laptop comes provided with an Intel Celeron T3500 dual core processor, with a speed of 2.1GHZ which I am aware is by no means the fastest.

Lenovo ThinkPad X220

If you are constantly on the go and plan to carry your computer with you, the Lenovo ThinkPad X220 has the features you are looking for. This laptop computer features a lightweight body, small display screen and fast performance. It includes a full feature set with a built-in webcam, microphone and several connectivity options. However, it lacks a large amount of memory.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X220 is designed for portability. This device features a 12.5-inch display screen, which is small compared to several similar devices but makes hauling the device around much easier. The display screen has 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, making the images crisp and sharp. Although this is not the highest pixel resolution we saw on a laptop, it is the same resolution you will find on many similar devices.

To further enhance portability, this laptop computer is lightweight, weighing a measly 2.9 pounds. You can carry this device with you on a constant basis without causing any burdens. It is 1.36 inches thick and 12 inches wide, which are small dimensions for a laptop computer.

One of the standout features on the Lenovo ThinkPad X220 is the fast performance this device provides. Using the Intel Core i5-2410M processor, you will experience speeds up to 2.3GHz. However, this processor also features Turbo Boost Technology that gives it a little extra performance. This laptop has Intel HD Graphics 3000 so your graphics run smoothly and are more enjoyable. Windows 7 Pro is the operating system included on this laptop.

You will find a full feature set on this laptop computer. A 720p HD webcam is included, along with dual microphones, which make video chatting and web conferencing possible on this laptop. This device offers several features ideal for video chats including a private chat mode. This eliminates background noise during a call. There is also a keyboard suppression feature that lowers the noise made from typing on the keys during video calls.

There are several ports and slots located on the laptop including three USB ports, an SD card reader, a 54mm express card reader and a combo port for both a microphone and a headphone. This device also has Hard Disk Drive Retention, which will secure the hard drive if the laptop falls. This security feature is a must-have to protect your hard drive and all the information you store within it.

The ThinkPad X220 doesn’t offer a large amount of memory. It features 2GB of RAM and 320GB of hard drive memory. This certainly is not the lowest amount of memory you will find on a laptop but is on the lower end of the spectrum. However, this computing device features up to eight hours of battery life on a single charge. This amount of battery life will differ depending on your use and configuration of the laptop but it should still be plenty of life to accomplish the tasks you do on your computer.

There is a one-year warranty offered with the Lenovo ThinkPad X220. If any questions or technical problems occur while using this device, you can contact a Lenovo customer service representative through email, phone or live chat support. There is a user forum available on the Lenovo website for additional assistance and feedback from other users. You can also download drivers and software from a section of the Lenovo website.

HP Pavilion dv6-6103sa

If we were awarding prizes for looks alone, the HP Pavilion dv6-6103sa would win hands down. It is certainly an eye-catching laptop, the brushed metal design giving the HP a look that wouldn’t be out of place in the living room, study or at work. It’s also a capable and versatile performer, boasting a strong set of specifications
Powered by AMD’s 1.6GHz A6-3140MX APU, the HP also utlises 6GB of RAM to register a score of 86 in our WorldBench 6 tests. Though comfortably beaten by laptops with Intel Core i3 or i5 processors, the HP isn’t exactly slow and will breeze through everyday tasks. Gamers will be satisfied with the inclusion of dual-graphics cards, both with 512MB of dedicated memory, which helped the HP to the best frame rate scores in FEAR of all the laptops we tested.

The screen does offer deep, rich colours but it also has an incredibly glossy finish, making reflections a problem. The sound quality of the HP is superior to that of any other in the group, with HP’s proprietary Beats Audio technology built in. All in all, it’s a great laptop entertainment-wise.
It’s also very good to work on – the keyboard is well spaced out with no keys touching, the Return, Backspace and Right shift button are all full size, and there is room for a numeric keypad to the side. The touchpad is large and is also backlit, meaning you can see where it is in dark environments, though it is also prone to picking up greasy finger marks.

There’s a generous 1TB of storage space – well in excess of any other laptop in this group test – and backup options are good too, with a multi-format DVD writer and two USB 3.0 ports, so you can take advantage of the faster data transfer times should you have a USB 3.0 compatible external hard drive. The battery life is decent, lasting five-and-a-quarter hours in our tests, and there is a fingerprint reader for additional security.

Alienware M11x (Core i7)

Alienware's M11x is an incredibly impressive laptop at a temptingly affordable price. About the only thing we can find fault with is the ridiculous 100Mb Ethernet port, and the inclusion of a SIM slot that does nothing. If these don't bother you, then this pint-sized yet potent laptop will likely make you happy for years to come.

The M11x has a deceptive amount of heft to it for an 11.6-inch laptop — in a size that's usually closer to the 1kg mark, it comes out as being double. Of course, being Alienware, this is because every pore is crammed with ridiculous power. This pint-sized portable powerhouse contains a Core i7 for goodness' sake.

The M11x carries the fine tradition of Alienware's distinctive style, this time in attractive matte black with harsh, sci-fi/military-style angles. Ah, yes, and almost everything lights up, from the Alienware logotype, alien head that doubles as a power button and status indicators under the monitor, to the vent-shaped headlights on the lip, to the much more useful illuminated keyboard. You can change the colour of all of them too through the AlienFX software, either to whatever colour you like, or off if you find them distracting.

The 1366x768, glossy 11.6-inch screen is wonderful to use, and the speakers sound better than most 15.6-inch laptops, with beefy bass, excellent volume and good clarity.

As an enthusiast laptop, ports are a little strange compared to the mainstream: the M11x features both HDMI and DisplayPort out, for example, with nary a VGA port in sight. Three USB ports are supplied (although oddly the integrated eSATA port is not here), dual headphone jacks are present along with a microphone jack (which can be reassigned for 5.1 audio), FireWire port, SD card reader, 100Mb Ethernet port and, strangely, an externally facing SIM card slot; however, no software dialler was bundled on our particular sample nor was a WWAN card available as an option. Acer Iconia

Acer tried to beat the tablet deluge at CES by announcing its Iconia tablet at the end of 2010. Unforutnately, the Iconia is still getting lost in the shuffle, and that’s a shame. The Iconia is a power tablet. This thing features dual 14-inch touch screens, a Core i5 CPU, and a full range of computer ports to match the average laptop. It also runs the full version of Windows 7, which will make better for productivity tasks but harder on battery life. The most innovative thing about this one is that the bottom screen has multiple input options, including a full virtual keyboard, a multimedia controller, and customizable touch gestures. Lots of companies have envisioned making the dual touchscreen idea work, we’ll see if Acer can pull it off (and do it at a reasonable price).

The combination of excellent performance, long battery life, vibrant screen and solid build in the MSI CX640-018UK makes this a fantastic all-round laptop that will suit a variety of tastes and users. Most importantly, it will handle anything you care to throw at it.

That's thanks to its Sandy Bridge Intel Core i7-2410M and a potent Nvidia GeForce 540M graphics card, which mean that it handles multimedia and gaming just brilliantly. There's also a power-saving mode, meaning that it's got excellent battery life to boot.
Even when multi-tasking with several applications, there's no slowdown. A dedicated Nvidia GT 540M graphics card handles photo and video editing, and you can play the latest games if you turn down the graphical detail.

Benchmarks

Battery life: 333 minutes
MobileMark 2007: 255
3DMark 2003: 13,143

Only the Acer and Sony provide better multimedia performance. If you're doing more basic work, such as browsing the web, the graphics card shuts itself down to preserve battery power.

The resulting battery life is excellent, stretching to five and a half hours. If you want a laptop for the daily commute or to take on trips, this is a great option. The 2.6kg solid chassis is a little bulky, but still fits into most large bags.

Lamborghini VX7 Asus

While continuing the distinctive Lambo design familiar from earlier models, it's under the bonnet that the VX7 really delivers. The laptop is built around a quad-core 2nd generation Intel Core i7 processors, and packs a dedicated nVidia GeForce GTX 460M graphics card, meaning the performance and graphics on this machine should be nothing short of awesome.

The 15.6-inch rig has dual 750GB hard drives with a USB 3.0 connection that means transfer speeds to external devices will be twice as fast as the regular USB 2.0 connection.

"The VX7 stays faithful to its Automobili Lamborghini pedigree with sheer performance for gaming, multimedia, online entertainment and productivity," said Asus.

"What’s more, in two directly licensed colours (orange and black carbon fibre) and with exquisite style in detailed design finishes, it perfectly reflects the panache of the Lamborghini’s iconic image."

Qosmio F750

After initial reports in January the Qosmio F750 is now ready and Toshiba, introduces the first "glasses-free 3D-laptop" , which is a 3D-capable notebook that has a technique that allows the enjoyment of the 3D experience without the annoying shutter glasses. The Qosmio F750 is a powerhouse that will be just as good for gaming as well as the movie experience. The 15.6-inch display offers a full HD (1080p) resolution and can be used both as 2D and 3D, even at the same time in separate windows. In addition, the unit has an HD (720p) webcam, which registers the position changes of the user and the 3D effect adjusts accordingly, to allow a three-dimensional representation from a variety of viewing angles.

Acer Iconia Tab A500

Generally I am more interested in Laptops and Notebooks, but there are a lot of tablets on the market now who sream for attention. One of the newer ones is the Ionia from Acer.
The Iconia Tab A500 is driven by a dual Core "Nvidia Tegra" - combined with an Nvidia GeForce GPU. The memory size is one gigabyte. The internal memory is 32 GB and is expandable through SD cards. The tablet has a 25.6 centimeter (10.1 inch) touch screen with a resolution of 1200x800 pixels. The device weighs about 730 grams and has dimensions of 260 (length) x 177 (width) x 13.3 (height) mm.

In terms of connectivity the device is equipped richly. For recording media content it provides two USB ports from - a micro-USB port for connecting to a home computer and a standard USB port for mass storage devices. A micro-HDMI output ensures the right to view images and video to a compatible television.

MEDION® ERAZER® X6813 (MD97762) with Shogun 2

- 15,6-Zoll Display; FullHD (1920 x 1080 Pixel)
- Intel Core i7-2630QM (2,0 – 2,9 GHz)
- 8 GByte DDR3 RAM
- 750 GByte HDD (5.400 rpm)
- Nvidia Geforce GTX 460M (1,5 GByte GDDR5)
- 2x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0, eSATA, HDMI, 4x Audio (1x S/PDIF)
- Card reader
- Ethernet, W-LAN (b / g / n), Bluetooth 2.1
- Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
- 3,3kg incl. Akku (87 Wh)

The new Erazer X6813 uses the same housing as the previous two models. Eye-catching edges and light manufacturing are still a main factor. The difference can be found in the paint. The two previous ones X6811 and X6812 hid the high power behind gray surfaces that appeared somewhat conservative. The low price for these devices could be seen from very far. The new black colour increases the look and feel very much. Also, the notebook appears not as heavy anymore, the dark surfaces conceals the nearly 17-inch compatible dimensions very well.

Samsung 900X3A i5-2537M

Super thin, ultra light and gigantic good display: No, this is not an Apple notebook, but Samsung's impressive new 13.3-inch model 900X3A i5-2537M. In the test, it clearly beats the similarly expensive precious model of Apple. For the main show  performances, the i5-2537M 900X3A superiors the Apple . Samsung is equipped with Intel's Sandy Bridge from the current platform, which in this case is the extremely low-power processor core version i5-2537M (1.4 GHz, turbo boost up to 2.3 GHz), the chipset and 4 HM65 GB of memory. For processing graphics the integrated Intel graphics core HD 3000card is responsible. Performance: Fast enough for Office and WoW

Samsung Slider PC 7

At the CES Samsung has unveiled a new netbook / tablet hybrid. The Samsung Slider PC 7 can do both convert anetbook into a tablet and vice versa. The Samsung uses a slider but does not use a rotating display like the Acer Aspire subnotebook 1825PTZ-414G32n. However it can slide the display.
The Tablet / notebook hybrid is equipped with an Intel Atom Z670 1.66GHz processor Oak Trail, capacitive 10.1 "display with a resolution of 1366 x 768, 32GB or 64GB SSD storage and 2GB RAM. UMTS will probably be integrated as well. The netbook will weigh about 1kg and the battery life is said to be close to 8 hours. The operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium.

Sony Vaio CR21-Series

Sony will bring a touch of luxury onto the market with the new models of the Vaio CR21-Series. For the case colors the manufacturer provides a palette of sand and precious metal colors.  The technology has been improved: widescreen display, a camera with 1.3 megapixels, 2 gigabytes of memory (RAM), a 200-gigabyte hard drive and an Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 "multi-core processor stuck in the casing of the laptop. The new NR11 series will replace the models of N series. Also this laptop has been given a visual refresher: a new form of housing and a model in elegant brown. The technique is similar to large parts of the CR21 series. There may be differences in display size (CR21-series: 14.1 inches, NR10 series: 15.4 inches) and the integratet Graphics Card (CR21 Series: ATI Mobility Radeon X2300, NR10-Series: Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100).

Sandy-Bridge-Notebooks

With the introduction of Intel’s new Sandy Bridge architecture, there are a lot of notebooks based on the new CPUs. I will explain the latest new models from different manufacturers. Core processors of the second generation: That’s how Intel calls the new Intel CPUs of the Sandy-bridge platform. If you already know the first generation you will be pleased to hear the next one have a similar designation of processors. This ensures that the Core i7 ist still reserved for high-end notebooks, while the core i5 is in the midrange segment and is expected to come in large numbers on the market. The Core i3 is reserved for the low end entry area. Sandy Bridge has been produced for notebooks and desktop computers. Particularly the fancy new features such as the ring-bus which combines the processor cache, graphics and cores quickly are worth mentioning. New power-saving features, Turbo Boost 2.0 and an extensive portfolio of dual-core and quad-core models are also very pleasant.
